Dr. David Cudmore is looking into the possibility of having a one-week water skiing day camp in Lochaber to give kids in the 12 – 18 age range in the area a chance to participate in an activity and learn a skill that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to do. It would operate out of Sylvan Hall and provisions will be made to ensure that camp activities will not interfere with the use of the swimming area, and care will be taken to minimize any disturbance to wildlife in the area where the skiing takes place.
In the near future Lochaber will have its own internet web site. Crispin Cornect of “Simply Ducky” has been selected to build the web site and, based on what he has shown us of his work, we will have a highly professional web site of which the community can be justifiably proud. It will keep locals posted on all the goings on in the community and provide information to outsiders who Google Lochaber hoping to learn more on what this spot on the map is all about.
The LCDA is anxious to hear from anyone who has suggestions as to what they would like to see on the web site, or can contribute current or historical photos or stories relating to the community.
Seaside Highspeed have now made high speed internet service generally available in our area, and what a difference it has made. There may be a couple of isolated pockets where their service is still not available, but Seaside are working to eliminate them. Adam Conter, Seaside’s Director of Communications, has advised that they are also working at upgrading the technology to provide increased speed of service.
Seaside have kindly provided complimentary service at Sylvan Hall, and a wireless router has been istalled so that anyone can access high speed internet service at the hall. So bear in mind that, if you are considering a function at the hall which would be enhanced by, for example, being able to access the internet to present web content or to Skype your function to other locations, the hall is now set up to handle it.
If you are interested in high speed service, but don’t yet have it, call Seaside at 1-888-965-5511 and they will be happy to set you up. Just in case you weren’t aware of it Seaside can provide seasonal service for cottagers.
The past cribbage “season” was a very successful one. John Gillis, and in John’s absense, Jim Webber, did a fine job of keeping things running smoothly. Those Wednesday night gatherings at Sylvan Hall provided a great chance to pass winter evenings by keeping in touch with neighbours and enjoying friendly rivalries among the cribbage crowd. Financially the cribbage nights contributed just over $1000 to the LCDA coffers.
That group of older folks are putting the rest of us to shame. They have been a busy lot, and besides having a lot of fun together on Wednesday afternoons, they have raised a considerable amount of money for use within the community. They have raised money to have the toilets at Sylvan Hall upgraded to higher toilets with grab bars to make them easier to use. Also they have hired Sarah and Allie Taylor to give the hall given a cleaning like it hasn’t had in years. Merle Taylor has raffled off parcels of her baked goods, jams, jellies and pickles at cribbage nights, and in the process collected $741 which she has donated to the seniors. They have presented quite a number of quilts to families who have been burned out of their homes plus to the Red Cross for their use.
The seniors nominee for volunteer of the year, Ella Stearns, was picked as Antigonish County’s representative for the provincial volunteers’ banquet in Halifax. Congratulations Ella! The honour was well deserved.
