Bird in Lochaber: Male Rose-Breasted Grosbeak

Here’s another not-too-common bird that people might like to see on the LCDA website. It’s a male rose-breasted grosbeak. It visited our feeder on the west side of Lochaber Lake on Friday, May 11. There seem to be a few of them around the area, as a couple of others were spotted during the spring migratory bird count that took place the next day. What a lovely bird!

Kids Beginner Learn to Sail Program

This summer Lochaber, through the LCDA, will host a Nova Scotia Yachting Association one week sailing school organized by Antigonish County Recreation and Sport Nova Scotia. It will take place on Lochaber Lake behind Sylvan Hall on Mon., July 30th through Friday, August 3rd from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. It is open to kids from 7 to 14 years of age with no sailing experience. Registration begins on Monday June 4th and runs until Friday June 29th. Registration is limited to 14 participants, and is on a first come, first served basis. If past years are an indication, it tends to fill up quickly, so plan to get your name in early. To register, or to get further information, please contact Antigonish County Recreation at 863-1141.

Birds in Lochaber: Blue Grosbeak

This morning (Saturday, May 5) we were visited by a male Blue Grosbeak here on the west side of Lochaber Lake. Judging by the bird book we consulted, this little fellow is either very lost or is striking out in search of fresh horizons. Anyway, we hope he stays around for a while.
