Red-bellied woodpecker

Recently Lochaber had a rare visitor.

A red-bellied woodpecker was spotted visiting bird feeders on both sides of the lake.

The red-bellied woodpecker is common in the eastern United States, but Nova Scotia is far out of its range.

We’ve had a male red-bellied woodpecker at our feeders on the west side of Lochaber Lake since shortly before Christmas. It’s been here pretty much every day since then. It fends off the starlings and jays without hesitation. What a treat!

I have had several visits from a male red-bellied woodpecker, both times between 3-30 p.m. The first visit was on November 16, then again today, November 27, 2012. It fed from our suet feeder and the black oiled sunflower feeder. An amazingly beautiful bird!

My wife & I had the opportunity of viewing this bird at our suet cake today. I get the regular woodpeckers everyday but I knew this one was quite different. Very pretty bird.

They must be extending their range – we have had one fairly regularly this winter here in Halifax, and also a lovely flock of common redpolls, which I have never seen at my feeder before!
