On the weekend of October 5th and 6th, the StFX and Antigonish Rowing Clubs will be hosting the Atlantic and Atlantic University Rowing Championships on Lochaber Lake, just over twenty kilometres south of Antigonish, NS on Highway 7. This regatta will involve approximately 200 competitors from across the four Atlantic Provinces. Races will run from approximately 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM both days, with award presentations at the end of each day’s competition at the Sylvan Hall gazebo. Food and beverages will be available on site. Extensive parking is available at two designated areas on Highway 7, and along the road on the west side of the lake. A shuttle bus will operate on an hourly basis between the Oland Centre on the StFX campus in Antigonish and the race venue.
The two kilometre course begins near the west side of the lake about ½ km south of the island, and runs north to the finish line closer to the east side, about ½ km south of Sylvan Hall. The best viewing area is probably along the road on the west side of the lake. There are also designated viewing areas along highway 7. Look for the signs. For those parking along West Side Lochaber Road, it is suggested that all park on the lake side of the road for best viewing from your car and to minimize road traffic obstruction. For those with lots of energy: bring your bike and follow races along the west side from beginning to end. Be prepared to work up a sweat — these boats really move! If you choose to watch from a boat, please take special care not to interfere with the racers in any way. As well as staying well away from the course, be very careful not to create a wake. Waves from wakes can travel a surprising distance across open water. Power boats must be stationary from the time approaching racers are within sight until after they have passed.
The organizers have proudly assured us that this will be one of the best regattas ever in Atlantic Canada! For further information, please pose your question in the comment section at the bottom of this post, or contact Katie Edwards at 863-5701 or katieedwards2008@gmail.com.
